Computer Injury
Millions of people today sit in front of computer screen for hours upon hours each day. This would seem like a pretty safe thing to do at first glance. but using computers can actually lead to a host of medical problems, from bad eyesight to carpal tunnel syndrome. Here, then, is a guide to avoiding the medical problems associated with computer use.
• Eye Care
Eye care specialists have become aware of several eyesight problems related to extensive use of video display terminals (VDTs). If you are farsighted, you may experience blurred vision and discomfort while using a VDT. Nearsightedness is usually not much of a problem because you can see close objects, such as the video screen, more clearly than distant ones. If you suffer from astigmatism, working at a VOT will cause you discomfort such as soreness, headache and fatigue.
• The following steps will minimize eye fatigue while using a computer:
• Use indirect room lighting
• Block excessive sunlight with shades or drapes, and maintain a high contrast between the characters and the screen background
• Arrange the monitor so the top of the screen is at or slightly below your eye level when you’re sitting at the keyboard. The best distance from your eyes to the screen is up to you; most people prefer 18-28 inches. Position the monitor to minimize glare from overhead lights and windows. You might want to try a tiltable monitor stand, which lets you set your monitor at the best angle for viewing.
• Clean your screen regularly; it helps reduce unwanted reflections.
• Give both your body and your eyes relief -- a 15 minute break to stretch your body and rest your eyes is recommended every two hours or MORE.
